Tips for driving in New Zealand

Driving in a new country can be daunting but being prepared and studying some of the basics can be a great first step in ensuring safety and a hassle-free trip. Thanks to drive safe New Zealand we can provide you with some of the top tips for travellers driving in New Zealand.

Please plan your trip accordingly to ensure that you are well rested before taking your journey around NZ. If your flight lands the same day as your pick up date, we highly recommend that you are well rested and adjusted to the time change before hitting the road. 

​

Drive to the rules and be wary of your surroundings when on the road. New Zealand road conditions can vary greatly in one day due to weather conditions. In addition, roads are known to be narrow, windy, and have loose gravels. It is also not unusual to see sheep or cattle on the road.

11 quick driving tips

1. Always keep LEFT. 

 

2. Always wear your SEATBELT. All passengers are required to have their seat belts on when the vehicle is in motion. 

 

3. Drive to the speed limit and always  STOP at Stop Signs.  

 

4. NO Left Turn on Red. 

 

5. Reduce speed around bends to observe the recommended speed limit, and always slow down at one-lane bridges to check for incoming traffic. 

 

6. Drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a crime. This will be strictly enforced by police, with penalties for offenders. 

 

7. Overtake only when it is safe to do so. Using passing lanes when possible, and never pass over the solid yellow line.  

 

8. Stay well rested, drive in increments, and take regular breaks. 

 

9. Weather can easily affect road conditions, check before heading out. Always drive to road conditions, reduce speed on wet roads and any roadwork areas. 

 

10. Do not use a mobile phone while behind the wheel. If you need to make a call or send a text message, please pull over to a rest area or a safe place.  

 

11. Give yourself an adequate amount of time while driving from one destination to another. We want you to be able to enjoy every moment of your trip.
